Public Education

"Shots fired"....the last thing you'd expect to hear while on campus. Prepare for the unexpected with this interactive presentation by the Oakland University Police Department. Learn what you can do to keep yourself safe while on campus and learn how law enforcement agencies across the nation are responding to this growing trend. This candid presentation, combined with an informative video and a question and answer period, will give you the information you need to keep yourself safe if you find yourself face to face with a gunman.

Today we live in a world where terrorism, the actions of unstable people, and the dangerous impulses of friends and relatives are very real and becoming increasingly more frequent. Massive bleeding from any cause, but particularly from an active shooter or explosive event where a response is delayed can result in death. Similar to how the general public learns and performs CPR, the public must learn proper bleeding control techniques, including how to use their hands, dressings, and tourniquets. Victims can quickly die from uncontrolled bleeding, within five to 10 minutes.

Skywarn training sessions are held to train individuals on how to accurately observe such weather phenomena as floods, hail, wind and its associated damage, cloud features that lead to tornadoes, and those cloud features that do not lead to tornadoes. Basic severe weather safety is also covered.

Classes are taught by the National Weather Service, they are FREE and last 1.5 hours. While new technology and scientific tools have advanced the National Weather Service's capability to predict severe weather, trained spotters remain essential to our warning process. It goes without saying that the more trained "eyes" we have in the field during a severe weather event, the better our service to the public will be.

OU Police welcomes community and student organizations for tours of the police station. Presentations are age appropriate and fun, yet deliver serious messages about personal safety, stranger danger, substance abuse and many other topics.

Tour groups will learn about the equipment police officers use and the responsibilities of the police department. All areas of the station, as well as patrol vehicles, will be included in the tour and photos will be allowed in designated areas. Tours last approximately one hour.

Tours must be scheduled at least 14 days in advance to ensure sufficient personnel are available. For safety reasons, we ask that tour groups are no larger than 20 people and that enough adults are present to supervise children.

To schedule a tour, please email [email protected].
